S-M-A-R-T Method helps people set their goals in a very precise way, it makes the plan to the point and very concrete and it doesn’t leave anything to chance. 

S.M.A.R.T. stands for

S- Specific

M- Measurable

A- Achievable

R- Relevant

T- Time-bound

Let’s look into each category separately

  1. S- Specific

Most important thing in goal setting is to be very specific. Write down exactly what you need when you are setting your goals. Don’t leave any grey area for the universe to interpret wrongly.

Incorrect: I want to be rich

Correct:  I am earning 1million dollar by 31 Dec 2021

  1. M- Measurable

Your goals need to be measurable. Set a specific date for your accomplishment.

Incorrect: I am earning 1 million dollar

Correct:  I am earning 1million dollar by 31 Dec 2021

  1. A- Achievable

Goals should be planned like a good workout. They should be able to stretch you to some extent, so you feel challenged, but should not cause you any stress.

Incorrect: I am going to lose 30 lbs.

Correct:  I am going to lose 1- 2 lbs. every week by not eating processed food and sugar for 6 months.

  1. R- Relevant

Make sure your goals are appropriate and relevant to your situation and must be realistic for you. It is really crucial to examine your goals.

Incorrect: I want to make money from trading in the stock market (But you hate math and finance)

Correct:  I want to make money by writing blogs (Since you love writing and communicating your thoughts)

  1. T- Time-bound

Goals should always be time- bound. It should be linked to a deadline. It creates a sense of urgency and drives you forward.

Incorrect: I will write my first blog this month.

Correct:  I will draft the outline of my first blog on or before next Thursday.

 

Real Life Example of a S-M-A-R-T Method Career goal that was achieved

Overall Goal: I want to work in a Middle-east country in Oil and Gas sector and have a bright career.

S-M-A-R-T Goal: By the age of 26, I will be working as a QC Inspector in Oil and Gas sector in Middle-east country.

Specific:  I will start to seek out companies in Oil and Gas sector at the start of my career after my college education. I will start building connections in that particular sector.

Measurable: I will be a QC Inspector in a company and working for Oil and Gas Sector in Dubai by the age of 26 years.

Achievable: Connect with 3 people every week on LinkedIn to reach out to them and build connections. After 1 year of my building connections I will send out at least 2 resumes every week to my connections.

Relevant: I know this is something I’m good at, I will keep growing my skill set and utilize all my connections and remain focused on my goal..

Time-based: I will start connecting with people in the relevant Industry and have my first 3 connections by the end of the next week.

Result- This person was able to achieve his goals and work in Saudi-Arabia (a middle east country) by following this method.

What went wrong? – This person realized later that he could have been more specific and should have chosen a specific country like Dubai, By saying middle-east country not being specific about the country, he  landed up in Saudi-Arabia where surely the Oil and gas sector is booming but it has no freedom and doesn’t have a life where he could bring his family, work and have a happy life at the same time. So, he realized that he should not leave any grey area for the universe to decide for him. By writing Dubai in his goals, I would have given clarity to the universe and making sure to have a career where his family life also wouldn’t have been impacted.

 

Real Life Example of a S-M-A-R-T Method Fitness Goal that was achieved

Overall Goal: I will lose my pregnancy weight and be in better health.

S.M.A.R.T. Goal: I will focus on my food habits, and I will begin to lead a healthier lifestyle hence will lose 30 pounds weight by the end of April 2019

Specific: I will lose 30 pounds weight by the end of April 2019

Measurable: By December, I will start my day with a glass of chia seeds and only eat Quinoa in my    

lunch with protein rich food.

Achievable: I will lose 1- 2 lbs. every week by not eating processed food and sugar for 6 months.

Relevant: I will seek my accountability partners help in case I feel demotivated or fatigued.

Time-based: In July I will introduce lentils in my diet. In August I will start walking 5K a day. By October I will start exercising 4 times every week.

Result- This person was able to achieve her goals and actually lose 50 pounds over the 1 year period she had planned. She started to lead a very healthy lifestyle.
